  • Students need to practice a skill 24 times to reach 80% competency.
  • First 4 practices are the most effective.
  • At the high school level, for every 30 additional minutes of homework completed daily, a student's GPA can increase up to half a point (Keith, 1992).
  • Grading homework is helpful, but homework in which a teacher has embedded instructive comments has the greatest effect on learning.

  • The amount of homework assigned to students should be different from elementary to middle school to high school. (About 10 minutes per grade level
  • Parent involvement in homework should be kept to a minimum.
  • The purpose of homework should be identified and articulated.
  • If homework is assigned, it should be commented on.
  • Establish and communicate a homework policy.
  • Design homework assignments that clearly state the purpose and outcome.
  • Vary the approaches to providing feedback on homework assignments.
